The training focused on common forms of permit abuse, including instances in which a friend or relative uses a vehicle displaying a disabled parking permit when the registered permit holder is not present.
Officials said such misuse can prevent seniors, veterans and people with disabilities from accessing parking spaces designated for their use.
“Disabled parking spaces are not a convenience. They are an essential accommodation for residents who depend on them every day,” Fernandez said. “By working directly with law enforcement and strengthening verification tools, we are sending a clear message that fraud and abuse will not be tolerated in Miami-Dade County.”
Fernandez also highlighted a QR code verification system being implemented by the Tax Collector’s Office. The system is intended to help law enforcement officers verify whether the registered permit holder is present when a disabled parking permit is being used.
According to the Tax Collector’s Office, the technology is designed to strengthen enforcement, improve accountability and help protect parking spaces reserved for people with disabilities.
The office said it will continue working with the Doral Police Department and other law enforcement agencies across Miami-Dade County to address misuse of disabled parking permits.
Fernandez thanked Doral Police Chief Matthew Castillo, the city of Doral and members of the Doral Police Department for their cooperation and efforts to protect access to disabled parking spaces.
