Dr. Jose Dotres, Superintendent of Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS), was honored this week with the 2025 Impact Advocate Award during Children’s Week Florida’s annual Advocacy Dinner and Awards Ceremony. The award recognizes leaders who have made a significant impact on the lives of children, teens, and families across the state through unwavering advocacy and transformative leadership.

As head of the nation’s third-largest school district—serving over 330,000 students—Dr. Jose Dotres has earned recognition for his steadfast commitment to education equity, mental health access, literacy, STEM initiatives, and teacher retention, especially within underserved communities.

A former English Language Learner himself, Dr. Dotres brings firsthand understanding to his work. Under his leadership, Miami-Dade schools have expanded support services and implemented policy changes that reflect the diverse needs of students and families. His advocacy has reached beyond the district level, including testimony before the Florida Legislature on crucial issues such as early childhood education and literacy interventions.

“Dr. Dotres is making such an impact in South Florida and throughout the state by speaking on issues that impact our youth,” said Erin Smeltzer, President and CEO of the Children’s Forum. “His leadership and passion for the future of Florida’s children, particularly in underserved communities, is inspiring. It’s clear that his legacy will be defined by the work he’s done.”

The award was presented by Miami-Dade student Clint John, Jr., in front of a packed room of lawmakers, child advocates, parents, and educators.

The evening also recognized former Senator Loranne Ausley with the 2025 Chiles Advocate Award, and South Florida teen Christopher Page, who received the Youth Advocate Award. All three honorees were presented with a special gift on behalf of the Lawton Chiles Foundation by Bud and Kitty Chiles.

The celebration, sponsored by Walmart, featured entertainment from the award-winning Deerlake Middle School Orchestra and a keynote address by B.J. Daniels. It served as both a celebration of advocacy and a call to continued action on behalf of Florida’s youngest residents.
