Miami-Dade Police Department Director survives self-inflicted gunshot wound following domestic dispute

Miami-Dade Police Department Director, Alfredo “Freddy” Ramirez shot himself in the head on a Florida highway after an argument with his wife, as confirmed by authorities on Monday.

Ramirez underwent surgery on Monday afternoon. It is reported that he was in stable condition following the operation

Reports are that on Sunday evening, officers responded to the Florida Sheriff’s Association’s Summer Conference in Tampa.

Police said that they were alerted to a male individual who had pointed a gun at himself on the 12th floor of the Marriott Westside.

Upon arrival, officers encountered Ramirez, 52, who assured them that he posed no danger to himself or others.

He was later released at the scene, according to Tampa police.

Domestic dispute preceding tragic event

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office later described the encounter as a domestic dispute involving Ramirez and his wife.

After the incident at the hotel, Ramirez departed and subsequently shot himself in the head. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement confirmed that the self-inflicted gunshot wound occurred on I-75, south of Tampa.

Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister addressed reporters in Tampa, acknowledging that the road to recovery might be difficult for Ramirez.

He shared that the police director would likely require multiple surgeries, but expressed optimism that Ramirez would ultimately pull through.

Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava extended heartfelt support to Chief of Public Safety Freddy Ramirez and his family during this difficult time. She conveyed that their collective focus was on his well-being and offered prayers for his speedy recovery.
