Miami-Dade County has appointed Miami-based visual artist Nicole Salcedo as its new artist-in-residence, with a focus on raising mental health awareness through art, nature and community engagement.

Mayor Daniella Levine Cava announced Salcedo's appointment during Mental Health Awareness Week. She will work with the county's Department of Cultural Affairs and Community Services Department to develop arts programmes that promote mental wellness, encourage connections with nature and help residents access support.

“Nicole Salcedo’s extraordinary artwork has a remarkable way of creating opportunities for self-reflection,” Levine Cava said, adding that the artist's work aligns with the county's efforts to promote mental health awareness and reduce stigma.

Salcedo's practice explores nature as a resource for mental health and well-being. Her previous work includes a partnership with the Institute for the Development of Human Arts on the Art of Grief exhibition, as well as meditation workshops centred on connections with nature.

“I am honored to be appointed the new Miami-Dade Artist-in-Residence, and to bring awareness to the importance of holistic wellness,” Salcedo said. “I look forward to working with the County to uplift mental health and help residents feel supported and seen.”

Salcedo has previously received commissions through Miami-Dade County's Art in Public Places programme. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

The artist-in-residence programme was established by Levine Cava in 2023, with environmental artist Xavier Cortada as its inaugural appointee. Haitian-Canadian artist Edouard Duval-Carrié was appointed to the position in 2025.

Ashlee Thomas, director of the Department of Cultural Affairs, and Cathy Burgos, director of the Community Services Department, said the initiative reflects the connection between arts, health and wellness and their potential to improve residents' quality of life.
