Jamaica’s road fatalities drop by 13% in 2023

Jamica’s National Road Safety Council has revealed statistics that reflect a reduction in road fatalities last year.

The data reveals a decline in the number of lives lost in road crashes, with a total of 425 reported fatalities resulting from 384 collisions throughout the year.

A 13 per cent reduction in road fatalities

The standout figure in the report is the 13 per cent reduction in road fatalities when compared to the previous year. 

In 2022, the nation witnessed a tragic toll of 488 lives lost in road accidents.

Collisions show a 10 per cent decrease

Accompanying the decline in fatalities is a noteworthy 10 per cent decrease in the total number of collisions reported in 2023. This decrease indicates positive strides in road safety measures and suggests that efforts to reduce accidents are making a significant impact.

Calls for continued vigilance

Dr. Lucien Jones, the Chairman of the National Road Safety Council, expressed his appreciation for the progress made in reducing road fatalities but remains vigilant about the current figure. 

Despite the notable decrease in deaths, Dr. Jones emphasizes that the number of fatalities, standing at 425, is still considered alarmingly high.
