Last week, the City of Miami Commission approved a one-year motorized scooter pilot program for District 2 which includes Downtown Miami, Brickell, and Coconut Grove. The ordinance was co-sponsored by Commissioner Ken Russell and Mayor Francis Suarez.

“Scooters are one more transportation option for our residents and visitors to get around, particularly where there are gaps in the public transit system,” said Commissioner Russell. “The pilot program we approved today in my district will allow the City the time to test out the program, monitor how it works and make any necessary adjustments before deciding whether to roll it out on a larger scale. People are excited to try them and now they will have the chance.”

The ordinance passed by a vote of 3-2. The ordinance will allow for the operation of electric scooters on streets and sidewalks located in District 2. Under the pilot program, electric scooter sharing companies wishing to operate in the district must obtain a license from the City and will be subject to regulations on fleet size, parking, data sharing, and customer service. Regular reports will be produced to allow officials to monitor the program and address any issues that may arise.
