Matthews propels Barbados to second-straight win in Women’s Super50 Cup

Reigning champions Barbados smashed Guyana by nine wickets in their Women’s Super50 Cup on Wednesday, thanks to a magnificent half-century from West Indies caption Hayley Matthews.

Matthews ended unbeaten on 72 from 42 balls as her side chased down 122 in the second-round match at Conaree.

Kycia Knight, who opened the innings, supported with 40 to help Barbados to their second win from as many starts following Monday’s easy win over Trinidad and Tobago at Warner Park.

Batting first, Guyana could only muster 121 in 35 overs with Sheneta Grimmond with 24, Shemaine Campbelle with 21 and Kaysia Schultz with 21, leading the way, as pacers Shakera Selman (2-16), Shamilia Connell (2-21), and spinners Matthews (2-25) and Keila Ellliott (2-30) blunted the innings.

Matthews and Knight then put on a 109-run opening partnership to effortlessly place Barbados on a winning path. The West Indies skipper struck eight fours and four sixes, while the left-handed Knight smashed five four.

In another game played at St Paul’s Sports Complex, Britney Cooper struck a half-century in Trinidad and Tobago’s one-wicket victory over Jamaica.

In chasing a paltry 124, the victors were aided by Cooper’s 52 from 57 balls, inclusive of five fours and a six.

Vanessa Watts claimed three for 16 while Celina Whyte bagged 2-26.

In Jamaica’s turn at bat, Natasha McLean struck an unbeaten 59 from 60 balls with two fours and five sixes but Jamaica could only muster 123 all out in the 40th over.

Off-spinner Samara Ramnath’s snared 5-13.

In the other game at Warner Park, pacer Qiana Joseph took 5-14 in helping the Windward Islands to an eight-wicket victory over the Leeward Islands.
