Man wrongfully convicted in Broward robbery seeks $1.7M after 400-year sentence overturned

A bill recently introduced in the Senate proposes that Sidney Holmes, a man wrongfully imprisoned for 34 years for an armed robbery, should be awarded $1.722 million in compensation from the state.

The proposal, known as “claim” bill (SB 6), was put forward by Sen. Shevrin Jones, D-Miami Gardens, for consideration during the 2024 legislative session, which will start in January.

The 1989 conviction and the basis for Sidney Holmes’ arrest

Reports are that 57-year-old Holmes, of Lauderhill, was found guilty for an armed robbery near a Fort Lauderdale convenience store.

He was arrested in October 1988 and given a hefty sentence after being convicted in a jury trial in 1989.

The wrongful conviction of Sidney Holmes

Despite having a criminal record, Holmes consistently maintained his innocence regarding the armed robbery.

However, an examination conducted by the Broward County State Attorney’s Office this year resulted in the revocation of both his judgment and sentence.

The drafted bill emphasizes that in Holmes’s situation, “the state’s system of justice yielded an imperfect result that had tragic consequences in this case.”
