Magnitude 4.9 earthquake rattles eastern Dominica, Martinique  on New Year’s Eve

A magnitude 4.9 earthquake jolted the region east of Dominica earlier today. 

The seismic occurrence, pinpointed by the UWI Seismic Research Center (UWI SRC), unfolded at approximately 7:31 am local time. 

This seismic episode originated at a depth of 10 kilometers beneath the Earth's surface, leaving inhabitants on edge.

Epicenter details

  • Roseau, Dominica, 95 km, E
  • Fort-de-France, Martinique, 98 km, NE
  • Castries, Saint Lucia, 149 km, NNE

The earthquake’s epicenter was calculated to be 95 kilometers east of Roseau, Dominica, positioning it in close proximity to the island.

Fort-de-France, Martinique, felt the tremors as well, though it lay slightly farther, about 98 kilometers northeast of the focal point. 

The effects were also noticed in Castries, Saint Lucia, approximately 149 kilometers to the north-northeast of the epicenter.
