Zoo officials in Jamaica have described as an “unfortunate” event” where a man whom they described as a contractor had his finger bitten by a lion over the weekend.
A video posted on social media showed the incident at Jamaica Zoo in St Elizabeth, a parish situated on the island’s southern coast. Media reports said the incident occurred last Friday.
“We are currently reviewing the video, with a view of preventing any future recurrences. It is an unfortunate event that should never have happened, and we, the family of Jamaica Zoo, are doing everything to assist the gentleman in moving forward,” noted an official statement by Zoo.
The video shows the man placing his hands in the mouth of the lion, while people, believed to be patrons, can be heard commenting on his actions in the background in disbelief. The lion then holds on to the man’s hand, while he vigorously tries to remove it.
“The actions displayed in a video by a contractor to Jamaica Zoo, is tragic and do not represent the safety procedures and policies that must be adhered to at all times at Jamaica Zoo,” the statement added.
