In 2023, the Jamaican Championships witnessed the emergence of a young sprinter who left the audience in awe during the men’s 100m heats. The dynamic MVP athlete, Kishane Thompson, effortlessly clinched victory in 9.91 seconds, marking his spectacular debut on the global stage.

Despite a strategic coaching decision that saw him skip the semi-finals, Thompson made his mark on the Wanda Diamond League circuit, delivering a series of impressive performances. Notably, he achieved a personal best of 9.85 seconds in Xiamen in September and concluded his season with a fourth-place finish in the Diamond League final in Eugene, clocking 9.87 seconds.

A year later, the 23-year-old Thompson had positioned himself as a leading contender for Olympic gold in Paris, following his triumphant performance at the Jamaican Olympic trials in late June. There, he stunned spectators with a world-leading time of 9.77 seconds, preceded by times of 9.82 seconds in the heats and 9.84 seconds in the semi-finals, placing him joint ninth on the world all-time list.

Less than two weeks later, Thompson continued his winning streak at the Gyulai Istvan Memorial in Hungary, cruising to a 9.91-second victory against a strong field, including world silver medalist Letsile Tebogo and two-time Olympic finalist Akani Simbine.

Performance in Kingston

Reflecting on his performance in Kingston, Thompson stated, “This year is the best I’ve ever been health-wise. Running the three rounds at this championship has helped me better understand my body and the sport. I was never short on confidence, but I believe I have much more to do as I can run way faster. Deep down, I look forward to some great competition and nice vibes from the top sprinters.”

Thompson, renowned for his quiet, respectful, and playful demeanor, as well as his remarkable intelligence, was initially mentored by Dennis May and later nurtured by coaches Oliver Heywood and the late Neville Myton at Garvey Maceo High School. Myton, a legendary Jamaican middle-distance runner known for spotting talent, predicted in 2018 that Thompson would become one of the greatest sprinters of all time, similar to his earlier prediction for Veronica Campbell-Brown.

Thompson's journey faced challenges, including shin splints, hamstring injuries, and the Covid pandemic, which hindered his ability to fully showcase his talent at Jamaica’s premier high school event, the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls Athletics Championships. After high school, Thompson made a significant decision to decline an overseas scholarship to Iowa Western Community College, choosing instead to stay close to his fraternal twin brother, Kishaun.

Powerful start and a strong finish

Thompson was scouted in 2019 by coach Paul Francis, who secured him a scholarship to the University of Technology. Currently, he is pursuing a bachelor's degree in sports management while training under the expert guidance of the Francis brothers, Paul and Stephen, at the MVP club in Jamaica.

Thompson is distinguished by his unique combination of a powerful start and a strong finish. His attributes include height, explosive power, aggression, and an unwavering determination to succeed, all of which hint at a future filled with excitement and triumph.

Hailing from the serene fishing community of Mitchell Town in Clarendon, recently devastated by Hurricane Beryl, Thompson’s journey has become a beacon of hope for his community. As the villagers rebuild their lives, they will take a moment on August 4 to pause and watch Thompson potentially bring glory to their town.

With his immense potential still unfolding, Thompson is poised to showcase his full capabilities at the Paris Olympics, putting all speculation to rest.
