JFF launches Under-17 tournament for Jamaica Premier League Clubs

The Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) is taking another significant step towards youth development in the country with the introduction of a new Under-17 tournament for Jamaica Premier League clubs, JFF president Michael Ricketts announced on Thursday.

The formation of this Under-17 tournament underscores the JFF's ongoing commitment to nurturing young talent in Jamaican football. Set to kick off on May 5, the competition aims to provide a platform for young players to showcase their skills and make a seamless transition from youth to senior-level football.

While participation in the tournament is not mandatory for Premier League clubs in its inaugural year, Ricketts encourages as many clubs as possible to take part. He emphasized the importance of capturing players who are on the cusp of transitioning from high school to professional football, providing them with a formal structure to develop their talents.

Timely initiative

The timing of this initiative aligns with changes in the global football landscape, particularly the decision to hold the FIFA Under-17 World Cup annually starting from 2025. Ricketts highlighted the need for Jamaica to remain competitive and relevant at the youth level, aiming to enhance the country's performance in international competitions.

Jamaica has previously participated in the FIFA Under-17 World Cup in 1999 and 2011, and the introduction of this tournament aims to bolster the country's competitiveness on the global stage. By nurturing talent at the grassroots level, the JFF seeks to strengthen Jamaica's presence in youth football and pave the way for future success.

As the inaugural Under-17 tournament prepares to kick off, anticipation is high for the impact it will have on youth football development in Jamaica. With the support of Premier League clubs and the JFF's commitment to fostering talent, the tournament promises to be a significant milestone in the country's footballing journey.
