Jamaica’s Tourism Strategy and Action Plan: A blueprint for progress

Jamaica’s Tourism Minister, Hon. Edmund Bartlett, underscored the pivotal role of the country’s Tourism Strategy and Action Plan (TSAP) in fostering stakeholder readiness to navigate the industry's evolving landscape.

Developed in collaboration with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the TSAP charts a course aimed at catalyzing socio-economic advancement and attracting investment.

With a focus on fortifying the local tourism industry against climate change impacts, the plan also aims to curtail the sector's environmental footprint.

Diversifying tourism

At its core, the TSAP endeavors to diversify Jamaica’s tourism offerings, fostering a more robust inbound tourism market.

Moreover, it seeks to propel the industry towards knowledge-driven and technology-enabled development.

A cornerstone of tourism development

Minister Bartlett emphasized the imperative of inclusivity within Jamaica’s tourism framework.

He stressed the need for strategies that not only bolster physical infrastructure but also prioritize human capital development.

Recognizing Jamaica’s greatest asset as its people, Bartlett advocates for initiatives that nurture intellectual, innovative, and creative capacities within the populace.

Nurturing economic resilience

A significant aspect of TSAP involves amplifying local production to bolster Jamaica’s capacity to retain a greater share of tourist expenditure.

Bartlett underscores the substantial consumption disparity between visitors and locals, underscoring the necessity for domestic industries, particularly agriculture, to meet the demands of the tourism sector.

Driving economic linkages

Highlighting the imperative of economic linkages, Bartlett emphasizes the need to curb financial leakage from the tourism sector.

By fostering synergies between tourism and other sectors, the strategy aims to maximize economic benefits within Jamaica.

Engagement for progress

The culmination of a series of consultations, the recent Tourism Strategy and Action Plan Consultation Workshop in Kingston and St. Andrew served as a platform for stakeholders to provide valuable input, ensuring the TSAP’s alignment with diverse perspectives and needs.
