Jamaica's PNP Human Rights Commission chairman Isat Buchanan resigns following remarks made during interview

Jamaica’s chairman of the People’s National Party’s (PNP) Human Rights Commission, Isat Buchanan, has stepped down following ‘ nasty’ comments aimed at Paula Llewellyn, the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The PNP confirmed Buchanan’s resignation in a press release issued on Monday.

The statement highlighted Buchanan’s belief that his departure would serve the best interests of the party, given the discord between his comments and the principles held by the PNP.

“He believes that resigning is in the Party's best interests, as the remarks in question do not reflect the values of the People's National Party,” the statement said.

The party further expressed its acceptance of Buchanan’s resignation and gratitude for his contributions and service to the Commission.

Earlier, an appeal was made by the Gender Affairs Minister, Olivia Grange, for Golding to immediately terminate Buchanan’s position.

In an interview with a blogger, Buchanan quoted a sexually explicit lyric by Kartel in reference to Director or Public Prosecutions (DPP) Paula Llewellyn.

Grange criticized Buchanan's conduct, characterizing his language as "misogynistic, crude, nasty, sexist, low and disgraceful," in reference to the country’s chief prosecutor.

She also urged the disciplinary committee of the General Legal Council (GLC) to immediately probe Buchanan over the comments which she said he delivered under the guise of quoting his client, the imprisoned dancehall entertainer, Vybz Kartel
