On the first of October, Jamaica's Ambassador to the United States, Audrey Marks assumed the chair of the Organization of the American States' (OAS) Permanent Council in Washington DC for the next three months.

In a virtual ceremony, she expressed her priorities for her chairmanship which include issues related to COVID-19, financing and access to the internet.

Ambassador Marks is being placed in the leadership for the hemispheric council for the second time.

In the virtual ceremony, Marks said that over the course of the next 92 days, she will be focused on "advancing the dialogue on issues such as accelerating the equitable access to vaccines against COVID-19, and more importantly right now, while we await a vaccine, we must ensure affordable, quality testing; departure testing to minimize imported cases to our countries and surveillance testing to manage the community transmission ravishing so many families at this time."

She added that, "we must also continue to explore increase access to concessional and non-concessional financing and greater corporation needed to increase access to the internet."

Ambassador Marks said that the aforementioned are just some of the issues that the OAS can assist the hemisphere on, to "develop to be the best it can be."
