Jamaica’s airports streamlining operations for a bustling winter season

As winter approaches, a wave of transformation is set to breeze through Jamaica’s international airports.

Anticipating a bustling winter tourist season starting December 15, significant strides are being taken to fine-tune logistics and operations at Sangster and Norman Manley International Airports.

Minister of Science, Energy, Telecommunications, and Transport, Hon. Daryl Vaz, said that logistics and operations at the airports are being refined to reduce wait times for both incoming and outgoing passengers.

A welcoming gateway: Prioritizing passenger experience

He said that the Sangster International Airport (SIA) is preparing to welcome an unprecedented five million passengers by December.

With such a record number, he emphasized the essence of prioritizing passenger experience during peak hours. The aim is to transform the airport into a welcoming gateway, offering visitors an initial impression that is both enjoyable and memorable.

Expansions and reconfigurations: Tackling potential congestion

Strategic improvements are underway to address and alleviate potential congestion, ensuring streamlined passenger flow.

Due to the increase in passengers, according to JIS news, Chief Executive Officer at MBJ Airports Limited, Shane Munroe, shared that several medium and long-term enhancements are being done to tackle potential congestion and streamline passenger flow.

These include expansions of various operational areas within the airports. Check-in areas are expected to undergo expansion processes, while certain concession areas are set for reconfiguration.

This will generate additional operational space, enabling a more fluid circulation of passengers.

“We’re doing a lot of work on the roadway – splitting the traffic that enters the airport into two separate loops, arrivals and departures,” Munroe said.

He added that people dropping off passengers will no longer need to go to the arrival area, which will reduce congestion at the arrivals curb by 50 per cent.

Reports are that there is also ongoing construction aimed at expanding the car park area.

Technological advancements: Enhancing efficiency

In a bid to hasten passenger processing and slash wait times, technology will play a pivotal role.

A slew of tech advancements, including the incorporation of additional self-service kiosks and the introduction of biometrics, are on the horizon.

Collaborative Efforts: Forging A Seamless Travel Experience

A harmonized approach, involving collaborative efforts with airlines and various stakeholders, is being championed to further elevate the passenger experience.

Various stakeholders, including airlines, are actively participating in implementing measures to reduce passenger processing time and wait times, underscoring the collective commitment to ensuring a smooth travel experience.

Forward momentum: Projected commencements

Looking ahead, significant expansions are envisioned, particularly concerning the immigration hall, with commencement slated within the year, marking a significant step towards transforming and optimizing the airports’ operational efficiency.
