Jamaican trio boosts West Coast Fever's prospects for upcoming Netball Season

Head coach Dan Ryan expressed his excitement about the upcoming Super Netball League season for the West Coast Fever, which is set to kick off in April in Australia. Ryan highlighted the team's blend of returning familiar faces and the addition of new, dynamic players.

During the recent free agency period from December 13 to 19, West Coast Fever secured the signings of three Jamaican players to complete their 10-player roster for the upcoming season. Jhaniele Fowler, the Sunshine Girls' captain and star goal-shooter, extended her contract with the Fever for another two seasons. She will be joined by fellow Jamaican internationals, attacker Shanice Beckford and defender Kadie-Ann Dehaney.

"I'm so excited about what this team can become, and our mission is going to be to become the best team we possibly can be," Ryan expressed. "All 10 players contributing, playing a role, using their skillsets and weapons to help get us across the line."

Ryan emphasized that the team would maintain its characteristic ferocity while adopting a slightly different look due to the new additions.

Recruitment strategy prioritized versatility

The Fever's recruitment strategy prioritized versatility, recognizing the importance of having a deep squad to compete effectively in the league.

"I think the most important thing to take out of last season is that it really does take a full team of 10 to win the competition, which is what we saw from the Thunderbirds and Swifts," Ryan noted.

"We've got a deep squad. We've got positional coverage in every single position on the court, and we can roll the subs in any position without having to make too many shuffles across the court."

He added, "I'm excited by enough continuity that we can keep doing what we're doing that's seen us be successful over the past couple of years. But we also have some really new, exciting players coming into our line-up that can make us change the game, shift our game plan, shift our strategies, and that unpredictable nature is going to be a bit of a competitive edge for us."

Retained international talents

In addition to the three Jamaican players, the Fever retained international talents like Jess Anstiss and Alice Teague-Neeld. They also added experienced players like Kelsey Browne and England captain Fran Williams to strengthen the team.

The future looks bright for the Fever with the signing of Jordan Cransberg and Olivia Wilkinson for three-year contracts each.

West Coast Fever will open their season against the Sydney Giants on Saturday, April 13, at the Ken Rosewall Arena.
