For generations, Jamaica has built its sporting identity on speed, power, and athletic excellence. Yet along the windswept coastline of Bull Bay, another story has been unfolding, one driven not by spikes on a track, but by a surfboard cutting through the Caribbean Sea.

That story reached a historic milestone recently as Jamaican surfing champion Elishama Beckford signed a global partnership with Quiksilver, one of the most recognizable names in international action sports.

The landmark agreement represents not only a personal triumph for Beckford but also a significant moment for surfing across the Caribbean, shining a spotlight on a sport that continues to grow beyond the region’s traditional athletic strongholds.

A dream forged in Bull Bay

Long before international recognition arrived, Beckford was a young surfer chasing waves on an island where surfing rarely occupied the national conversation.

Raised in Bull Bay, Jamaica’s surfing heartland, he developed his craft through determination and persistence, pursuing a sport that often operated far from the mainstream.

Reflecting on his journey, Beckford acknowledged the magnitude of the moment.

“Growing up surfing in Jamaica, I never imagined that one day I would be joining a brand with the history and influence of Quiksilver,” Beckford said. “This partnership means more than just sponsorship; it’s recognition of years of dedication, sacrifice, and belief in a dream.”

His rise has mirrored the growth of Jamaica’s surf community itself, small in size but ambitious in outlook.

Carrying the Jamaican flag beyond the reef

Over the years, Beckford has become the face of Jamaican surfing on the international stage, representing the country at multiple World Surfing Games, including competitions in California and El Salvador.

His performances have helped introduce global audiences to a surfing culture that many never associated with Jamaica.

Yet Beckford insists his ambitions extend well beyond personal achievement.

“I’m proud to carry the Jamaican flag wherever I go to compete and to show the world that our island has incredible surfing talent,” he said. “My goal has always been bigger than personal success. I want to help build the future of surfing in Jamaica and create more opportunities for young surfers coming up. Having the support of a globally recognised brand is just more proof that Jamaica has a spark to add to the world of surfing.”

His vision centers on expanding opportunities for future generations and ensuring that aspiring surfers see pathways that previously seemed out of reach.

Why Quiksilver chose Beckford

For Quiksilver, the partnership is about more than athletic performance.

The company, whose international roster includes elite surfers, snowboarders, and skiers such as Kanoa Igarashi, Griffin Colapinto, Jackson Bunch, Travis Rice, and Sammy Carlson, views Beckford as a bridge between global surf culture and the distinctive spirit of the Caribbean.

According to Josh February, Beckford embodies both athletic potential and cultural significance.

“We are incredibly excited to welcome Shama to the Quiksilver family,” February said. “As one of Jamaica’s inspiring surf talents, he not only represents the next generation of athletes, but also brings the unique energy and spirit of the Caribbean to our global surfing community. What makes this partnership especially meaningful is our shared passion for the ocean, surf culture, and inspiring future generations of surfers around the world.”

The endorsement signals Quiksilver’s confidence in both Beckford’s future and the broader potential of Caribbean surfing.

Where surfing meets reggae

The collaboration will begin with a project that blends two powerful cultural forces.

Beckford will become the face of the inaugural Quiksilver Bob Marley Collection, scheduled for worldwide release on June 17. The collection is designed to fuse the adventurous ethos of surfing with the enduring influence of Jamaican music and culture.

The initiative also underscores the growing global appeal of Jamaica’s cultural identity, bringing together the spirit of the ocean and the legacy of Bob Marley in a single campaign.

More than a personal victory

The significance of Beckford’s achievement stretches beyond contracts and endorsements.

His journey, from the waves of Bull Bay to a partnership with one of the sport’s most iconic brands, offers tangible proof that world-class talent can emerge from unexpected places.

It also reinforces a message that Jamaican surfers have championed for years: the island’s sporting excellence extends beyond the track.

For Beckford, the mission remains clear.

“Jamaica has a spark,” he said. “And now, the world is about to see it.”

With a global platform now beneath him, the surfer who once chased waves on Jamaica’s southeastern coast is preparing to help carry an entire sporting community into a new era of visibility and opportunity.
