Jamaican police nab several Klansman Gang members linked to murders, shootings

Members of Jamaica’s security forces on Thursday launched a major operation against the notorious Klansman Gang, leading to the fatal shooting of a gang member and the seizure of three illegal firearms. 

This operation, which commenced at 5 a.m., yielded significant results, including the confiscation of a motor vehicle, cash, luxury items, and designer clothing with an estimated value of $3 million.

Multiple gang enclaves targeted

Deputy Commissioner Fitz Bailey and his team spearheaded the operation, strategically targeting various enclaves linked to the Klansman Gang. 

The deceased gang member was identified as 29-year-old Sunman McFarlane, also known as ‘Max,’ hailing from Ellerslie Avenue in Spanish Town. 

The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has initiated an inquiry into the incident.

Nine-month investigation 

During a press briefing held on Thursday afternoon, Deputy Commissioner Bailey highlighted the operation as the culmination of a rigorous nine-month investigation, led by the Counter-Terrorism and Organized Crime Investigations Branch. 

Reports are that this operation resulted in the apprehension of 31 gang members in connection to various murders and shootings.

Focus on Tesha Miller’s Klansman faction

The investigation honed in on the segment of the Klansman Gang controlled by incarcerated leader Tesha Miller. 

Deputy Commissioner Bailey disclosed that the Spanish Town-based Klansman Gang, ranked among Jamaica’s top five criminal organizations, has been linked to a staggering 800 murders across the island in the past nine years.

A determined effort to dismantle the gang

Authorities remain resolute in their mission to dismantle the Klansman Gang, which operates not only in St. Catherine but also in several other parishes, including St. James, Clarendon, and the Corporate Area. 

Deputy Commissioner Bailey underscored the reduction in gang-related murders, with gangs accounting for 67 per cent of the murders in 2023, down from 80 per cent in 2018.
