Jamaican police crack down on motorcyclists amidst rising crime wave
In response to a recent surge in criminal activities involving motorcyclists, Jamaica’s Public Safety and Traffic Enforcement Branch (PSTEB) has announced its decision to escalate its efforts in cracking down on motorcyclists as a pivotal component of the Police High Command’s anti-crime strategy.
PSTEB’s Head, Assistant Commissioner Gary McKenzie, revealed that data has been obtained, confirming that pillion riders on motorcycles have been embroiled in multiple armed conflicts with law enforcement officers.
Warning to motorcyclists
He issued a stern warning, indicating that motorcyclists who transport pillion riders will face intensified scrutiny.
He emphasized the necessity of possessing a valid driver’s license when operating a motorcycle and carrying a passenger.
He added that motorcycles that are moving around with two persons raise a red flag, prompting officers to do the appropriate checks, and searches and where necessary, arrest, prosecute, and seize where they have to.
Seizures on the rise
As part of their ongoing crackdown, PSTEB reported a significant increase in motorcycle seizures last year.
ACP McKenzie noted that in 2023, they confiscated over 2,000 motorcycles, a rise of 900 compared to 2022.
Reports reveal that more than 100 motorcyclists lost their lives in road accidents last year.
