Jamaican star Rushell Clayton has officially joined the roster of elite athletes set to compete in the inaugural Grand Slam Track League, which will kick off in 2025.
Clayton, the second-fastest Jamaican woman of all time in the 400m hurdles, adds her name to the growing list of world-class competitors, including fellow Jamaicans Ackera Nugent and Roshawn Clarke. This exciting new professional track league, spearheaded by sprinting legend Michael Johnson, will host a series of events between April and September next year.
Clayton, fresh from a fifth-place finish in the 400m hurdles at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, expressed her enthusiasm about joining the league. "I’ve worked so hard to get to this point, and I’m ready to give Grand Slam Track my all in every single race. I’m focused and ready," said the two-time World Championships bronze medalist.
Modeled after the prestigious Diamond League
Grand Slam Track, modeled after the prestigious Diamond League, aims to bring together the fastest track stars from around the globe. The league will feature 48 athletes each year, who will face off in high-octane matchups across 12 different disciplines, including sprints, hurdles, and distance events. Each competition will be structured around four key meets, known as ‘Slams,’ where athletes will race in a series of electrifying head-to-head showdowns.
Clayton, who has clocked a personal best of 52.51 seconds in the 400m hurdles, will compete alongside American stars Shamier Little and Jasmine Jones, making for some thrilling matchups in the coming season. Grand Slam Track has already announced the participation of major names like Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, Fred Kerley, and Grant Fisher, with 18 more athletes yet to be revealed.
Jamaican fans will be especially excited as Clayton joins her compatriots Ackera Nugent, the national 100m hurdles record holder, and Roshawn Clarke, the World Under-20 and national 400m hurdles record holder.
