Jamaica’s Minister of Labour and Social Security, Hon. Pearnel Charles Jr., is placing a significant emphasis on enhancing the rights and welfare of Jamaican participants in the Seasonal Agricultural Workers Programme (SAWP).

Charles articulated the government’s commitment during the Jamaica Information Service (JIS) Television program ‘Get the Facts’.
He emphasized the necessity of ensuring acceptable minimum standards and expanding opportunities for Jamaicans.
This, he noted, involves strengthening relationships with stakeholders to elevate Jamaica’s competence on the global stage.
Optimizing services and Enhancing Efficiency
Efforts are underway to improve liaison services, with a focus on orienting and training officers, establishing new offices, and refining the selection, orientation, evaluation, and monitoring processes.
Charles underscored the importance of efficiency and effectiveness in achieving program objectives, ensuring safe opportunities for Jamaicans while promoting program sustainability.
Support for farm workers
Liaison officers serve as primary points of contact for immediate support to farm workers.
Charles highlighted the increased frequency and impact of their engagement, expressing optimism for positive trends in expanding opportunities for Jamaicans in Canada and the United States over the next three years.

Charles encouraged farm workers to remain committed to the program, emphasizing openness and communication with the Ministry.
He assured them of opportunities to voice their concerns, underscoring the program’s benefits for Jamaica and expressing eagerness to expand both opportunities and benefits.
Impact of the program
Last year, nearly 10,000 Jamaicans benefited from the program in Canada alone.
The Overseas Employment Programme has long been a vital contributor to both the Jamaican and Canadian economies, providing financial support for many Jamaican families to improve their standard of living.
