Jamaica’s Minister of Labour and Social Security, Pearnel Charles Jr., is spearheading discussions aimed at enhancing the inclusion of individuals with disabilities in the overseas farm work program, among other initiatives.
Recruitment underway
According to an article by Jamaica Information Service (JIS), the initiative has seen two individuals recruited and are now in the process of making preparations to depart Jamaica.
Charles Jr. emphasized the Ministry’s active efforts to expand participation, aiming to provide more individuals with access to overseas employment opportunities.

Expressing his commitment to broadening opportunities for persons with disabilities, Charles Jr. highlighted the practicality of integrating them into various programs, notably the farm work program.
He noted positive responses from employers and stakeholders, affirming their support for the concept.

Update at closing ceremony
The update came during the conclusion of the Strategic Engagement of Rural Women with Disabilities in Sustainable Farming Techniques Project, held at the Abilities Foundation in St Andrew on February 27.
This project, executed in partnership with the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives, aimed to empower rural women with disabilities in sustainable farming practices.
Investment and transformative training
Approximately $5.7 million has been invested in the initiative, with around 50 individuals trained and positively impacted by the program.
At the ceremony, 25 participants from various parishes received certificates and starter kits, symbolizing their completion of the sustainable farming project.
Encouragement and government support
Charles Jr. urged participants to leverage their training for community development and innovation within Jamaica’s agricultural sector.
He reassured them of the government’s full support and emphasized the Ministry’s commitment to inclusivity.
Acknowledging the crucial role of partnerships, Canada’s High Commissioner to Jamaica highlighted the significance of collaborative efforts in achieving impactful outcomes.

Susan Hamilton, Managing Director of the Abilities Foundation, emphasized the training’s focus on climate-smart technologies, advocacy skills, and business development, equipping participants with essential tools for success.
