Jamaican government bolsters efforts to combat illicit trade in firearms and drugs

The Jamaican government has intensified its efforts to combat the illicit trade of firearms and drugs, aiming to quell the activities orchestrated by transnational criminal networks operating across borders.

Strengthening legal frameworks and border security

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Security, Hon. Dr. Horace Chang, emphasized the critical connection between these illicit trades and their detrimental impact on national safety and security.

Chang revealed that the government has undertaken significant measures to dismantle these criminal networks, demonstrating its commitment to safeguarding the nation.

Key initiatives to address this pressing issue include the recently enacted Firearms (Prohibition, Restriction and Regulation) Act of 2022, substantial amendments to the Proceeds of Crime (Amendment) Act in 2019, and an expanded focus on border security by the Jamaica Customs Agency.

Chang made these declarations during his address at the 37th International Drug Enforcement Conference (IDEC), held over three days at the Montego Bay Convention Centre in Rose Hall, St. James.

Facilitating international collaboration

According to Chang, the IDEC serves as a crucial platform for fostering collaboration among law enforcement officials from various corners of the world.

It offers a unique opportunity to strengthen global cooperation and jointly tackle the issue of illicit drug trafficking, which serves as a catalyst for the proliferation of transnational criminal organizations.

Chang expressed confidence that the connections made and decisions taken during the conference would serve the best interests of the participating nations.

He also believes it will lay a solid foundation for combating the transnational criminal organizations that pose a threat to countries worldwide.

The theme and attendees

Under the theme ‘Disrupting Transnational Criminal Organizations and their Supply Chains,’ the IDEC, which took place from September 19 to 21, has drawn over 900 delegates representing 139 countries.

These delegates have gathered to engage in discussions and collaborative efforts aimed at addressing drug enforcement challenges and curbing the global drug trade.
