Jamaican-born Canadian Senator, Dr. Rosemary Moodie has been awarded Ontario’s highest honour, “The Order of Ontario”.
The award acknowledges the outstanding achievements of individuals made in Canada.
Senator Moody is a distinguished Neonatologist and Paediatrician. Her contributions to the medical field in Ontario have fostered social change and facilitated the expansion of health care access to society’s most vulnerable. She has provided leadership to many health organizations and projects, including the development of Canada's largest affordable housing project for low-income women.
Senator Moodie received her education at St Hugh's High School in St Andrew, Jamaica, and the Faculty of Medical Sciences of the University of the West Indies.
In 2017, she was conferred with the Order of Distinction in Jamaica for outstanding contribution in philanthropy, community development and medicine in the Jamaican Diaspora of Canada.
Although she has been a resident of Canada for over 30 years, Moodie is still very much active in Jamaican affairs. Up to 2019, Moodie sat on the PSOJ's Gender and Minority Commission, which advocates for equity and safety for the island's vulnerable women and girls. She also severed on the board of the Scotiabank Jamaica Foundation.
She also continues to advocate for the well-being of women and children in the Senate of Canada.
