Jamaica: NHT reveals housing plan for 15,000 units nationwide

The National Housing Trust (NHT) has revealed plans to kickstart a comprehensive development strategy aimed at constructing over 15,000 housing solutions across the island.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness recently outlined the details of this expansive initiative, highlighting that over 96 per cent of the proposed units are earmarked for middle-to-low-income earners.

Diverse housing mix to address varied needs

Of the projected 15,000 units, Holness specified a breakdown: 4,309 two-bedroom units, 7,600 one-bedroom units, and 3,100 serviced lots. 

This diversified approach aims to cater to a spectrum of housing needs within the targeted income brackets, ensuring a wider impact.

Affordability and accessibility at the forefront

Emphasizing the NHT’s commitment to feasible housing solutions, Holness underscored the importance of prioritizing affordability and accessibility. 

The prime minister outlined a policy geared towards providing lower middle-income, low-income, and no-income solutions, ensuring that future housing projects are designed with these principles in mind.

Tailored support for different income brackets

Holness elucidated the nuanced approach to support, indicating that mortgage rates and grant allocation would be tailored to meet the specific needs of different income brackets.

Low-income earners, for instance, may benefit from different mortgage rates or targeted grants aimed at enhancing equity.

Empowering communities: Handover ceremony

The prime minister’s remarks came during the official handover ceremony of residential serviced lots for phase one of the Friendship Oaks housing development in Goshen, St. Elizabeth. 

During the event, more than 106 titles for residential serviced lots were distributed to beneficiaries.
