Jamaica: Mustard Seed International assures no taxpayer burden for Haitian orphans’ care

Father Garvin Augustine, the Executive Director of Mustard Seed International, has affirmed that the expenses incurred in caring for the 59 Haitian orphans recently welcomed in Jamaica will not burden taxpayers.
Amid concerns raised regarding whether the Jamaican government would assume the responsibility of supporting these children, Father Augustine assured the public during his appearance on TVJ’s Smile Jamaica that the private charity HaitiChildren will continue to finance their care.
Community support and generosity pour in
Acknowledging the community’s concerns, Father Augustine highlighted the significant contributions from Jamaicans and corporate entities towards supporting the Haitian orphans.
He emphasized the ongoing need for assistance, urging individuals to reach out to their head office to provide any form of aid, whether it be essentials like toiletries or more substantial items like wheelchairs.
Promising adjustment to a new environment
Father Augustine provided a heartening update on the orphans, noting their positive adaptation to their new surroundings.
Despite the challenges posed by overcrowding at the current facility, he reassured the public that plans are underway to relocate some of the children to alleviate the strain.
He emphasized the temporary nature of their stay, indicating that the primary goal is to facilitate their return to Haiti once conditions improve.
However, he disclosed that the current arrangement is slated for a two to three-year period, emphasizing the importance of sustainable care until stability is restored in their home country.
