Jamaica Independence Celebrations to be Scaled Down Due to COVID-19

Jamaica's Culture Minister, Hon. Olivia Grange on Friday, July 23, outlined plans for Jamaica’s upcoming Independence Day celebrations on August 6.
The Culture Minister said in a statement that there would be limits owing to the pandemic, and as a result, gatherings will be limited.
“But we can stay home and celebrate with our families and we can enjoy the offerings that are being produced by the JCDC (Jamaica Cultural Development Corporation) and my Ministry to ensure that we all can still celebrate while we keep safe.”
According to the Minister, the formal celebration will continue for about ten days and will culminate with ‘A Jamaica Independence Story,' a made-for-television event, on Friday, August 6.
“Our Festival Queen finals, our Excellent Arts Finals, the Governor-General will host an evening of fine entertainment offerings, and a variety of activities,” Grange said of the Jamaica 59 celebrations.
Grange also encouraged Jamaicans both at home and abroad to participate in the festivities and adorn their homes.
“Put your flag outside your door. Put it in your yard. Decorate your building. Decorate your storefront. Use the Jamaican colours and just create that Spirit of Independence, especially since we can’t go out there and have fun and celebrate in large gatherings. So I’m saying to all of you out there: be bold with the black, green and gold.”
Independence celebrations this year will be held under the theme, ‘Jamaica 59: Come Mek We Celebrate Online’.
