“For the first time, Jamaica and Mexico will be connected by nonstop air service, operated by Aeroméxico, Mexico’s flag carrier and one of Latin America’s most recognised airlines,” Bartlett said.
“This new route demonstrates confidence in Jamaica and opens important opportunities to attract visitors from Mexico and other destinations across Aeroméxico’s extensive network.”
Bartlett said the government intends to use the additional connectivity to generate greater economic benefits for Jamaican businesses, workers and communities.
The flight schedule is designed to allow passengers traveling from other Mexican cities to make same-day connections through Mexico City to Montego Bay.
Giancarlo Mulinelli, Aeroméxico’s senior vice president of global sales, said the service would also strengthen links between Mexico and Jamaica.
“We are thrilled to connect Mexico City with Jamaica for the first time in our history, opening access to one of the Caribbean’s most iconic destinations,” Mulinelli said.
“We are confident that this route will create new ties between our two countries while providing customers with more options to connect to world-class destinations.”
Aeroméxico will operate the route using Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft configured with 166 seats. The aircraft will feature personal entertainment screens, along with beverage and snack service.
Jamaica’s Director of Tourism Donovan White said the service will make the island significantly more accessible to Mexican travelers.
“Aeroméxico’s arrival in Montego Bay makes Jamaica significantly more accessible to Mexican travellers and enables us to bring the destination closer to a market with a strong affinity for the Caribbean,” White said.
The Jamaica Tourist Board plans to work with Aeroméxico and travel industry partners to promote the service and build demand in Mexico.
The route also gives Jamaica another avenue to diversify its tourism source markets beyond its traditional strongholds in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom.
Tickets for the new Mexico City-Montego Bay service are now on sale through Aeroméxico’s sales channels.
