Jamaica bolsters school safety measures against natural disasters
In a proactive move to fortify safety measures for students and staff within Jamaica’s educational institutions, the Ministry of Education and Youth has unveiled a series of initiatives aimed at mitigating risks posed by natural disasters, particularly hurricanes and flash floods.
During the recent Caribbean Safe School Initiative (CSSI) Virtual Pre-Ministerial Forum on Tuesday, March 12, Portfolio Minister Hon. Fayval Williams divulged comprehensive strategies to bolster school safety.
Robust policies and collaborative assessments
Minister Williams underscored the Ministry’s commitment to fostering a safe environment, citing the implementation of well-established systems, policies, and guidelines tailored to navigate natural disasters.
Notably, the Ministry has enlisted architectural students from tertiary institutions to conduct thorough structural assessments of school buildings, categorizing them based on their integrity status.

With a focus on enhancing safety, Minister Williams emphasized the Ministry’s dedication to fortifying the structural integrity of schools categorized as unsatisfactory.

Moreover, transportation safety emerged as a paramount concern, prompting the Ministry to explore measures to safeguard students during their commute to and from school.
Unified response framework
Recognizing the importance of a cohesive response mechanism, the education sector has integrated key professionals—such as deans of discipline, guidance counselors, school nurses, and social workers—into a unified unit within schools.
