JAAA adjusts Nationals schedule to boost men's 4x400m Olympic hopes
Key Points(5)
  • In a last-ditch attempt to qualify the men’s 4x400m relay team for the Paris Olympics, the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) was set to hold a second virtual meeting with stakeholders on Friday evening.
  • According to the Jamaica Observer, that meeting was to finalize plans for staging a relay race during the National Championships, scheduled for June 27-30.
  • After the third failed attempt to qualify at the NACAC New Life Invitational in Nassau, Bahamas, last Sunday, the Garth Gayle-led JAAA has decided to organize a relay race as part of the National Championships.
  • A preliminary meeting was held on Tuesday evening, resulting in a "framework" being established.
  • However, sources indicate that the plan will require the "buy-in from the coaches and agents" to be successfully implemented.

Adjusting the schedule

The proposed schedule adjustments involve holding the relay race just after 8:00 pm on the final day of the championships. Currently, the event is planned to run over three rounds, starting Friday and ending on Sunday. Various formats have been suggested, including first-round byes for top 400m runners, to ensure athletes are not overworked.

Veteran track and field aficionado and athlete representative, Claude Bryan, has suggested a format similar to that used at the 2024 European Championships. This would see the top eight-ranked Jamaican men in the 400m event given a bye to the semi-finals. The first round would be held on Thursday’s opening morning, with qualifiers joining the eight runners who received byes. Bryan emphasized that this format would allow athletes sufficient recovery time to perform optimally in the final.

Jamaica has only failed to qualify for the men’s 4x400m at the Olympic Games once, in Mexico City in 1968. Sixteen teams will qualify for each of the five relays at the Olympic Games, with 14 spots already taken from the World Athletics Relay Championships held in May. The remaining two spots are reserved for the top two teams based on times run within the qualifying period, which closes on June 30.

Final effort

Jamaica is currently ranked 17th in the men’s 4x400m relays, one place outside the quota spots, with a time of 2:59.34 minutes, achieved at last year’s World Championships in Budapest, Hungary. France holds the 15th spot with a time of 2:58.45, and Zambia is 16th with 2:59.12 minutes.

Despite qualifying in four other relays, Jamaica has twice failed to qualify in the men’s 4x400m at the World Athletics Relay Championships. The most recent attempt at the NACAC New Life Championships saw the team of US collegians Reheem Hayles, JeVaughn Powell, Kimario Farquharson, and Tarees Rhoden run 2:59.75 minutes.

The JAAA’s determination to secure a spot for the men’s 4x400m relay team at the Paris Olympics reflects the significance of maintaining Jamaica's proud tradition in track and field. Friday’s meeting and proposed adjustments to the National Championships schedule represent a concerted effort to achieve this goal.
