CHELMSFORD, England — In a dazzling display of form and finesse, West Indies captain Hayley Matthews has catapulted to second place in the ICC Women’s T20 International Batting Rankings, matching her career-best position following a Player-of-the-Series performance against England.
Matthews amassed a commanding 177 runs over three matches, highlighted by a sublime, unbeaten century in the series opener at Canterbury. Her dominance with the bat not only led the charge for the West Indies but also reestablished her as one of the most formidable players on the international stage.
The 26-year-old all-rounder has now overtaken India’s Smriti Mandhana and Australia’s Tahlia McGrath to claim the No. 2 spot — a ranking she last held in December 2023. She currently holds 765 rating points, just 29 shy of Australia’s Beth Mooney, who remains the world’s top-ranked T20I batter.
Experience, strategy, and execution: The formula behind the rise
Reflecting on her recent success, Matthews credited both strategic clarity and the benefit of global T20 experience as keys to her performance surge.
“I think just having some firm plans and playing to my strengths at all times has helped me a lot,” Matthews explained.
“I feel like I’ve been fortunate enough to get to play a lot of T20 cricket around the world and gain a lot of experience. I’ve learned a lot more about my game and just put my plans into practice. Thankfully, since I’ve been here, I’ve been able to execute pretty well.”
Matthews’ consistency and calm under pressure have become hallmarks of her leadership — and now, her personal accolades are catching up with her impact on the field.
Dottin and Joseph slide in rankings amid Matthews’ rise
While Hayley Matthews ascended, other West Indies players saw downward movement in the latest ICC rankings. Veteran power-hitter Deandra Dottin, who was absent from the England series, slipped nine places to 20th, now holding 609 rating points. Emerging opener Quina Joseph also dropped 11 spots to 40th, finishing with 492 points.
These shifts further underscore Matthews’ singular brilliance during the England tour — a campaign where her bat did most of the talking.
Focus shifts to ODI series in Derby
With the T20 series behind them, Matthews and the West Indies Women will now shift focus to the upcoming One-Day International (ODI) series against England, beginning Friday in Derby. The three-match contest will offer another platform for Matthews to extend her sparkling form — and perhaps close the gap on the top-ranked Mooney.
