Haitian Judge interviews Colombian suspects in President Moïse’s murder case
For the first time since their arrest more than two years ago, some of the 18 Colombian suspects implicated in the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse are undergoing interrogation by a Haitian judge.
Previous reluctance and judicial complications
Reports are that the Colombian suspects initially chose to remain silent when questioned by an earlier judge assigned to the case.
This latest round of interrogations is taking place in Petion-Ville, a government office near Port-au-Prince, under the supervision of Judge Walther Wesser Voltaire.
According to reports, the first two suspects were transported on Monday and Tuesday from Haiti’s main penitentiary in downtown Port-au-Prince to a government office in nearby Petion-Ville where they were undergoing interrogations by Judge Walther Wesser Voltaire.
More than 40 individuals have been arrested in relation to Moïse’s assassination, including elite members of the Haitian police force after Moïse was fatally shot in July 2021 in his private residence.
The investigation in Haiti has moved very slowly, in part due to a high turnover of judges overseeing the case. Voltaire is the fifth judge to handle the case so far, following his predecessors who stepped down for various reasons, including personal and family safety concerns.

U.S. prosecution of extradited suspects
According to media reports, the United States has actively pursued its own legal actions against the case’s suspects.
Charges have been filed against 11 individuals who were extradited to the U.S. over the last couple of years. These proceedings have revealed a complex web of conspiracy that extends beyond Haiti’s borders, involving parties from Haiti to South Florida.
First conviction in relation to Moïse’s assassination
In a parallel judicial development, a Haitian-Chilean businessman became the first suspect to be convicted and sentenced in connection to Moïse’s assassination. Currently, 10 other suspects are awaiting trial in Florida.
While it remains unclear what information the Colombian suspects have provided to Judge Voltaire, the process has been deliberately opaque.
Voltaire has made it clear that details of the ongoing investigation will not be made public due to its sensitive nature.
Waiting in Haiti's penitentiary
As the suspects continue to await their fate in Haiti’s main prison, only a few hearings have occurred, and a trial date has yet to be set.
