Haiti’s Provisional Electoral Council has set Sept. 9 as the deadline for candidates to complete registration for the country’s upcoming elections, as preparations continue for the first national vote in a decade.
The Provisional Electoral Council, known by its French acronym CEP, has circulated an election timetable to political organizations outlining the candidate registration process, which began online Aug. 20.
Online registration will close Sept. 3, after which candidates will have until Sept. 9 to submit the required documents.
Applications will be reviewed between Sept. 10 and 17, with a preliminary list of approved candidates scheduled to be published Sept. 17.
Earlier this month, the CEP announced that the first round of presidential and legislative elections, along with a constitutional referendum, will be held Dec. 13.
The elections will mark the first time Haitians have gone to the polls since 2016, when Jovenel Moïse was elected president. Moïse was assassinated on July 7, 2021, plunging the country deeper into a political and security crisis.
Preliminary results from the first round are expected Dec. 19, with final results scheduled for Jan. 9, 2027.
A second round of presidential and legislative elections, along with local elections, is planned for Feb. 21, 2027.
Final results from the presidential and legislative runoffs are expected March 7, while final results for the local elections are scheduled for March 12.
Campaigning for the first round will run from Oct. 5 through Dec. 12, while candidates advancing to the second round will be allowed to campaign from Jan. 10 through Feb. 20.
According to the CEP, 17 of Haiti’s 18 recognized political groupings, representing 228 political parties, have been approved to participate in the elections.
Meanwhile, Culture Minister Emmanuel Ménard registered to vote Monday at the National High School in Pétion-Ville, accompanied by his chief of staff and several colleagues.
During the registration exercise, Ménard announced plans for a balanced schedule allowing candidates to present their programs on state media.
He also said a civic education and voter-awareness campaign would be launched ahead of the December elections as authorities work to prepare Haitians for their first trip to the polls in 10 years.
