In a vibrant display of tradition and cultural richness, Guyana is set to observe Deepavali, an esteemed Hindu festival, also globally celebrated as Diwali, this November.

Diwali also known as the ‘Festival of Lights’ symbolizes the victory of light over darkness or good over evil.

Deepavali will be observed on Sunday, November 12, 2023.

A public holiday for deep reflection

The Guyanese Ministry of Home Affairs has announced that the day following the festival, Monday, November 13, 2023, will be recognized as a public holiday.

The government’s formal notification brings this to the fore, reinforcing the nation’s commitment to respecting and honoring its diverse cultural fabric.

Notification of this has been made under the Public Holidays Act.

It reads: “Pursuant to the provisions of Sections 3(1) and 3 (2) of the Public Holidays Act, Chapter 19:07, of the Laws of Guyana, Monday, November 13, 2023, is hereby declared a public holiday.”
