Guyana: Reconciliation talks scheduled between GTU and Ministry of Education

In an effort to resolve ongoing disputes, representatives from the Guyana Teachers' Union (GTU) and the Ministry of Education (MoE) are set to engage in crucial reconciliation talks today.

The discussions are scheduled for 10:30 am at the Ministry of Labour and come after a period of industrial action by teachers who have been advocating for improved remuneration and working conditions.

Focus on multi-year salary agreement

The primary agenda for the meeting will be to deliberate on the terms of the new multi-year salary agreement.

The Ministry of Education has expressed its intention to negotiate terms starting from 2024 onwards.

However, the GTU has indicated a preference to discuss agreements covering the years 2019 to 2023.

This difference in focus points to a significant area of negotiation between the two entities.

Ongoing industrial actions and demonstrations

Despite the scheduled talks, the GTU remains committed to its planned industrial actions. Teachers resumed their strike on May 9, with plans to continue until a satisfactory agreement is reached.

In a show of solidarity and to symbolize the knowledge imparted to students, all teachers are encouraged to wear blue today.

Furthermore, a demonstration is organized at Philadelphia Street in New Amsterdam starting at 10 am.

On the following Tuesday, teachers plan to wear yellow, symbolizing sunshine and the joy of learning, to further highlight their cause.
