Guyana mother appears in court on charge of murdering three year-old son

A 26-year-old pregnant woman, accused of stabbing her three-year-old son to death, will re-appear in court in Guyana on September 12, following an appearance on Wednesday.

Brenda Ferriera, was not required to enter a plea to the indictable charge when she appeared before Magistrate Peter Hugh.

The Court was also told that the woman, who appeared dazed when she entered the building, will undergo a psychiatric evaluation to determine her suitability to stand trial.

She is alleged to have to chase down her young child at their home on the East Coast of Demerara before stabbing him to the chest and back on August 25. The child was rushed to the police but died while receiving treatment.

A post-mortem examination revealed that the stab wound to the chest also pierced the toddler’s heart.
