Unprecedented rainfall causes chaos
Since April 29, torrential rains have relentlessly pounded Rio Grande do Sul, leading to severe flooding in urban areas.
Home to over 11 million people, this southern state—bordering Uruguay and Argentina—has seen hundreds of thousands displaced due to the rising waters.
A dire toll
The floods have led to at least 78 fatalities, with over 130 individuals still reported missing.
Authorities have declared this the worst flooding the region has seen in more than eight decades, highlighting the severity and scale of the disaster.
Presidential visit and future measures
President Lula da Silva, along with members of his cabinet, has visited the affected regions, attributing the crisis to climate change.
In a move to address immediate and future risks, he has committed to funding reconstruction efforts and enhancing infrastructure to better withstand similar events, affirming the government’s proactive stance in combating the impacts of climate change.
