In a strategic move aimed at fortifying its national defence and security apparatus, the Government of Guyana has inked a pivotal agreement with French firm OCEA S.A. for the acquisition of an offshore patrol vessel, valued at €39.5 million.

The agreement, signed at a simple yet significant ceremony, underscores Guyana’s commitment to bolstering the capabilities of its armed forces, particularly the Guyana Defence Force (GDF).

Minister of Finance, Dr. Ashni Singh, emphasized that the procurement is aligned with President Mohamed Irfaan Ali’s directive to enhance the GDF's capacity, thereby ensuring the safeguarding of the nation’s territorial integrity.

Stepping up defence initiatives

Dr. Singh underscored the government’s proactive stance in reinforcing the GDF’s capabilities, citing recent initiatives such as the acquisition of two aircraft as testament to this commitment.

The move signifies a notable escalation in equipping the armed forces, in accordance with the overarching goal of fortifying Guyana's national defence framework.

National endeavor for defence

Brigadier Omar Khan, Chief of Staff of the GDF, echoed the sentiment that equipping the defence force is a paramount national imperative.

He emphasized the necessity of enhancing Guyana’s defence apparatus to safeguard its sovereignty and create an environment conducive to national development.

Brigadier Khan lauded the government’s dedication and vision in ensuring that the GDF is furnished with the requisite assets across air, land, and sea domains.
