In a major educational development, Guyana’s President Irfaan Ali has announced that starting this year, the government will cover the full cost for up to eight subjects for students in both private and public schools sitting the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations.
The announcement was made during a public address at the West Demerara Secondary School, where President Ali emphasized that the move is part of his administration's ongoing efforts to strengthen and develop the country’s education sector.
The cost for up to eight CXC subjects can amount to approximately GYD$46,500. However, the cost is often subsidized based on the parents’ income. With this new measure, families across the board will benefit from significant financial relief.
“Beginning this year, as I speak to you, parents are preparing to pay for their children’s CXC fees. I have good news for you, with effect from this year CXC, the government will pay in full the cost for at least eight subjects for every single child in the public and private schools,” the President announced.
“These are the policies that we are embracing. This is the future that we are creating. We don’t need an event to invest in the people and their future. We are not a seasonal presence in your lives. Think about it and be fair,” the president stated.
Ali further highlighted that the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) government remains committed to representing the interests of citizens across all sectors, particularly in education.
The president also underscored the government’s significant investments in the education sector, noting that billions of dollars are being directed toward upgrading and building new educational facilities nationwide.
This initiative aims to make education more accessible for all students, ensuring that financial barriers do not hinder their academic progress.
