Guyana Advocates for second International Decade for People of African Descent

In a resounding declaration of solidarity with the global movement for racial equality, Guyana has called for the United Nations to establish a second International Decade for People of African Descent.

Minister of Tourism, Industry, and Commerce, Oneidge Walrond, took center stage on Tuesday at the Third Session of the Permanent Forum on People of African Descent in Geneva, Switzerland.

Representing Guyana, Walrond delivered a passionate plea for collective action in advancing the rights and well-being of people of African descent worldwide.

Commitment to progress

Emphasizing Guyana’s unwavering commitment to this cause, Minister Walrond underscored the nation’s dedication to both supporting the work of the Forum and implementing domestic initiatives aimed at uplifting Guyanese of African descent.

This stance aligns Guyana with its Caribbean Community (CARICOM) counterparts, who have been stalwart advocates for reparations and racial justice.

Inclusive vision

Acknowledging Guyana’s rich multicultural fabric, Minister Walrond affirmed the government’s pledge to ensure equal opportunities for all citizens, irrespective of racial background. The objective is clear: to foster an environment where every individual can thrive and contribute to the nation's prosperity.

A call for continuity

The groundwork laid by the ongoing International Decade for People of African Descent, spanning from January 2015 to December 2024, has been monumental. However, activists are adamant that the fight against racism and discrimination must persist.

Proposals for extending the decade to span from 2025 to 2034 have gained traction, reflecting the global community’s unwavering determination to effect lasting change.
