Grenada’s ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) will officially launch its election campaign on October 4, as speculation mounts that Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell could call a general election before the end of the year.
Mitchell, who is also NDC political leader, told a party mini-rally on Sunday that the party would present all 15 of its candidates at the October 4 event.
“The official launch will be at the 4th of October. We are going to present all 15 of our candidates,” Mitchell told supporters at the St. Paul’s Community Center.
The event is also expected to provide greater clarity on the timing of the election. Mitchell has previously said that the “conch shell” will be blown on October 4, prompting widespread speculation that he could announce the election date that day.
Grenada’s last general election was held on June 23, 2022, when the NDC won nine of the 15 elected seats and the opposition New National Party (NNP) secured six. Parliament can be dissolved before the end of its five-year term, allowing an election to be held earlier than the constitutional deadline.
Mitchell used Sunday’s rally to urge supporters to ensure eligible voters are registered, saying Friday would be the final opportunity to register.
“This week is the last week for registration,” Mitchell said. “So if you are not registered, please go ... and get registered.”
He also called on supporters to organize voters ahead of polling day and identify people who would need assistance getting to the polls.
Mitchell said the upcoming election would be an opportunity for voters to assess the NDC’s record since taking office in 2022.
“This is the National Democratic Congress election to win. This is election about validating the last four years,” he said.
He told supporters that while the government had made progress, more work remained to be done.
“But the work is not finished. There is a lot more to be done,” Mitchell said. “Our best chapter has to be written in the next five years.”
The NDC is preparing to contest all 15 constituencies. The main opposition NNP has also selected a full slate of candidates and will enter the next general election without its founder and former prime minister, Keith Mitchell, at the helm.
The NDC has also been mobilizing supporters overseas. A questionnaire circulated among party supporters abroad asked whether they could travel to Grenada to assist during the election, instructing respondents to assume that the vote could be held “on or before December 31, 2026.”
The constitutionally required deadline for the next general election is later than that, meaning an election in 2026 would require an early dissolution of Parliament.
