Grenada’s opposition contemplates changes to Oath of Allegiance

Grenada’s main opposition, the New National Party said it would support changes to the island’s oath of allegiance as the nation prepares to mark its 50th year of political independence from Britain.

Historical ties to the monarchy

The oath, which is part of the constitution Grenada received when it gained independence in 1974,  is made to the King.

Championing change

Prominent constitutional lawyer and former attorney general, Dr. Francis Alexis, believes the oath can be amended.

He shared that the oath can be adjusted to reflect a pledge to the state of Grenada.
