Grenada’s golden jubilee $50 bill honors olympian and former prime ministers

The Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB) has recently announced the launch of a special EC$50 note, a tribute commemorating Grenada’s 50 years of independence.
This new currency note is set to be introduced to the public in June and will circulate exclusively in Grenada.
It is designed to encapsulate the essence of the nation’s rich history and achievements, featuring portraits of notable Grenadian figures such as Prime Ministers Eric Gairy and Maurice Bishop, along with Olympic 400-meter champion Kirani James.

A creative collaboration and regional significance
The inception of this commemorative note was sparked by a proposal from Grenadian Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell to ECCB Governor Timothy Antoine.
The idea quickly took off, despite the typically lengthy process of designing and producing currency, which usually spans over two years.
A dedicated team from Grenada, led by the creative mind of Orlando Romain, meticulously crafted the design of the note.
This unique currency will not only hold value within Grenada but also across the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union (ECCU), making it legal tender in Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Montserrat, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, and St Vincent and the Grenadines.
This move underscores the interconnectedness of these island nations and the shared heritage within the ECCU.
A symbol of national pride
The unveiling of the EC$50 note was a momentous occasion, with Prime Minister Mitchell highlighting its reflection of “things that are uniquely Grenadian.”
The initiative has been met with enthusiasm from the Grenadian community, including those residing in Carriacou and Petite Martinique, as it marks a significant milestone in the nation’s history.
Grenada’s position as the first ECCU member to gain independence from the United Kingdom is further celebrated through this initiative.
The country’s commitment to supporting other member states in commemorating their own milestones with similar currency notes signifies a broader regional solidarity.
Honoring Grenadian legends
The first of these commemorative notes was ceremonially presented to Grenada’s Governor General Dame Cécile La Grenade by Governor Antoine, marking the beginning of the note’s circulation.
Additionally, a touching tribute was paid to the families of Eric Gairy and Maurice Bishop, with the second note being presented to Gairy’s daughters in a heartfelt ceremony.
This gesture was received with deep gratitude and surprise, reflecting the enduring impact of their father's visionary leadership on the nation’s progress.
The prime minister also honored Angela Bishop, the widow of Maurice Bishop, and Kirani James.
