Gov. Ron DeSantis has appointed Marlon Weiss to the 17th Judicial Circuit Court in Broward County, filling the vacancy created by the May 1 retirement of Chief Judge Jack Tuter.

Weiss, a partner at Armstrong Teasdale LLP since 2021, brings a strong appellate background to the bench. He is board-certified in appellate practice and previously served as a criminal appellate attorney in the Florida Attorney General’s Office. Earlier in his legal career, he clerked for a judge in the U.S. District Court.

The appointment was announced Tuesday and marks the latest judicial pick for the governor in one of the state’s busiest circuits.

Weiss earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and his law degree from Emory University School of Law in Atlanta. Over the course of his career, he has handled a range of complex legal issues, primarily focusing on appellate litigation.

Raised in North Dade and South Broward, Weiss is a graduate of North Miami Beach Senior High School. He now lives in Hollywood, Florida, with his wife and young daughter.

In addition to his legal work, Weiss is an avid boater and outdoorsman. He enjoys kayaking, spearfishing and scuba diving along the waterways and coral reefs of Broward County.

The 17th Judicial Circuit is based in Fort Lauderdale and serves all of Broward County. It is the second-largest judicial circuit in the state, with 90 judges — 58 circuit court judges and 32 county court judges — presiding over cases in four courthouses. These include the main courthouse in Fort Lauderdale and satellite locations in Deerfield Beach, Plantation and Hollywood.

Weiss’s appointment is effective immediately.
