St. Vincent Opposition Unity Labour Party (ULP) leader Dr. Ralph Gonsalves says what he describes as an emerging “governance crisis” under the New Democratic Party (NDP) administration is creating conditions for a swift return of his party to government.

Speaking on a local radio program, the former prime minister pointed to what he called a “labour resurgence” and growing public dissatisfaction with the current administration as signs of a major political shift underway in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Gonsalves said the country is currently in a “state of crisis,” citing concerns across the economy, national security and public administration.

He described the government as being “on autopilot,” adding that its leadership appears unaware of the severity of the country’s challenges and lacks a clear plan to address them.

The ULP leader also referenced a recent national council meeting, which he said drew strong attendance from public workers, including teachers and police officers. He characterized the gathering as evidence of what he called the strength of the labour movement and said it had left the current administration “dazed and frightened.”

Gonsalves further claimed that some supporters of the NDP believe the government may be limited to a single term or could leave office before its mandate ends.

“Grown men and women need to stand up when they’ve made mistakes and say, ‘I made a mistake,’” he said, adding that “the only option available is the Unity Labour Party.”

He said increasing numbers of citizens have been visiting party offices and reaching out for political guidance, arguing that the party’s grassroots support is strengthening.

“The roots of labour are very strong,” Gonsalves said, adding that the party is prepared to provide leadership that he believes is currently lacking.

He also accused the government of using “fear-mongering” and “intimidation” against civil servants, arguing that such tactics would not prevent growing support for the opposition.

“People are getting less afraid,” he said, referring to what he described as increased willingness among supporters to publicly align with the ULP.

While noting his continued involvement in international and regional affairs, Gonsalves said his immediate focus remains on what he called the “resurgence” of the ULP at home.

He said he could not predict who would hold the office of prime minister this time next year, but suggested that political disorganization within the current administration could accelerate a return of the opposition to power.
