Former Bermuda premier Sir John Swan, the island's longest-serving premier and one of its most influential businessmen, has died at the age of 90.

His death was announced Thursday. A cause of death has not been disclosed.

Paying tribute, Bermuda Premier David Burt described Sir John as a towering figure whose impact on the island's political and economic development continues to be felt.

"Sir John dominated Bermuda's politics for a generation and for over a decade served as Premier of Bermuda. His tenure was historic, and those of us who have followed him in this office still feel the shadow of his larger-than-life presence," Burt said.

"Our politics often saw us on opposing sides, but we were united in a love of this island and her people. Sir John's 'common touch' remains a hallmark of his life and legacy."

The government said flags on all government buildings would be flown at half-mast in his honor.

Born with visual impairment and dyslexia, Sir John overcame significant challenges through determination and ambition. In 1962, he founded the John W. Swan Agency, a real estate development and savings-and-loan company that played a major role in shaping modern Bermuda.

Between 1968 and 1978, the company built an estimated 40 percent of Bermuda's homes. He also spearheaded major development projects in Hamilton, including the island's first condominium complex and its first 10-story building.

Sir John entered politics in 1972 and served in Parliament for 25 years. He held several Cabinet portfolios before becoming premier in 1982, a position he held for more than 13 years until 1995.

Among his most significant achievements was leading negotiations for the 1985 USA-Bermuda Tax Convention, which helped establish Bermuda as a leading global insurance and reinsurance center and strengthened its position as a major offshore financial hub.

In recognition of his contributions, Sir John was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1990 as a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire (KBE). He was also inducted into the Bermuda Business Hall of Fame in 2010 as one of its first four members.

Beyond politics, Sir John remained active in business, public policy and real estate development, including advocating for the revitalization of Hamilton's waterfront.

Burt described his legacy as "a story of humble beginnings, dogged determination, business and political skill and success, founded in a genuine heart for service."

Sir John is survived by his children and extended family.
