The police said Shepherd, 26, was shot on Sunday becoming the 36th murder recorded on the island since the start of the year.
According to official reports Shepherd was outside his home when the incident occurred. He was shot multiple times by a pillion on a motorcycle.
Shepherd was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital by a private vehicle but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Shepherd represented Barbados at the youth level and recently played for the University of the West Indies Blackbirds in the earlier rounds of the Republic Cup
Police are also investigating another murder following the death of a 47-year-old man on Sunday night.
Police said they had received a report around 10:15 p.m. that a man was seen with gunshot wounds. The man later identified as Mark Anthony Armstrong collapsed and died after he ran into the Fairchild Street Terminal in the capital.
