Forecast predicts active 2024 Atlantic Hurricane season
In anticipation of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season, the Colorado State University Tropical Meteorology Project team has released a forecast signaling a period of heightened activity.
Projections suggest an active season ahead, with an increase of over 50 per cent in storms across all categories.
The forecasters anticipate a majority of these storms to make landfall within the Caribbean and the mainland United States.
Storm count projections
Expectations set forth by the forecast estimate a total of twenty-three named storms for the upcoming season.
Among these, eleven are projected to escalate into hurricanes, while five could potentially reach major hurricane status.
This forecast considered the first major prediction for the 2024 season, is grounded in the observation of warmer-than-normal tropical Atlantic conditions.
These conducive atmospheric circumstances are deemed favorable for both the formation and intensification of hurricanes.
Heating up: The role of sea surface temperatures
A significant contributor to the forecast’s predictions lies in the record warm levels observed in the sea surface temperatures of the eastern and central Atlantic.
These temperatures are currently soaring and are expected to persist well above average as the hurricane season approaches.
The Colorado State University (CSU) highlights this as a crucial factor amplifying the likelihood of an extremely active hurricane season.

The CSU, committed to providing accurate and timely information, has announced plans for regular updates on the forecast.
In June, the team will release an updated assessment, offering insights into any developments or shifts in the forecasted outlook.
Anticipating NOAA’s assessment
While the CSU’s forecast provides a comprehensive initial outlook, attention now turns to the upcoming assessment from the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Climate Prediction Center.
Scheduled for release in May, NOAA’s forecast will offer additional perspectives and insights into what lies ahead for the 2024 hurricane season.
