Five killed in police shootout in Guyana

Five people were killed during a shootout with police in Guyana on Tuesday morning.

The police said several men attempted to invade a house in Lilliendaal on the outskirts of the capital, Georgetown.

The authorities said that they have recovered an AK-47 rifle with two magazines and two shotguns at the scene.

Investigators also found equipment that was used to cut through the gate to the property. They believe that the men may have been after a safe that was stored in the house.

The homeowner’s name has not been released.

Three of the five men killed during a stand-off have been identified and included a 31-year-old taxi driver.

Crime Chief Paul Williams said the police had received an emergency call during the early hours on Tuesday morning of the break-in and that when law enforcement officials arrived on the scene they found themselves in an armed confrontation with the five gunmen.

At the end of the gunfight, the five gunmen were found with multiple gunshot injuries. They were taken to the Georgetown Hospital where they were all pronounced dead.
